![]() The next day on the train to New York, she and many of the same people were nose deep in the New York Times, when Roz noticed an article about how EVERY major actress (as they were in those days) had turned down her Hildy Johnson role in “His Girl Friday.” “Oh how marvelous!” she thought. “Oh how marvelous!” a chorus of well-to-do Connecticut accents responded. The late, great Roz Russell, in her autobiography, humorously related how on a visit east to her sister, she got the nod to star with Cary Grant in a Howard Hawks’s film for Columbia, “His Girl Friday.” Her sister, Clara the “Duchess,” announced at a fancy dinner party that Roz was starring in a film with Cary Grant. And if not both, one of them is making the movie the comedy it is! I particularly love that Katharine Hepburn is the star comedian in this film. The funniest movies that I’ve seen, all involve, Grant and Hepburn. The love story is great, and the fact that all these ‘old’ men are trying to configure the new future too funny.įirst, I need to state that Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant make the most fantastic couple in Comedies. Especially the young man of the home…Gary Cooper. This is only one of the many that I’ve seen over a dozen times it’s so great! I love that Barbara Stanwyck added some spunk into these Mens’ lives. Also, Don Ameche’s face in the scene above as Colbert talks to ‘Francie’ over the phone. And, of course, John Barrymore! He was Colbert’s guardian angel. I loved how quickly Claudette Colbert would easily have the power to make Don Ameche look absolutely crazed. This movie was prank versus prank in the 1930s. I decided to post the best scene in the movie. This film had me laughing to the point that my heart could have stopped. Monty Wooley! Ann Sheridan! Bette Davis! Can a comedy get any better than this? I love how Bette would stand staring Monty dead in the eye, and laugh! I just know if I were to be in her position, such a sarcastic, witty and funny man would just make me fall to my knees. The way she walked out of that room, ha ha, just too funny! Also, that wonderful Ann Sheridan. Not only could she dance but she could act in a movie acting like a kid! I don’t know how she did it, but I guess that’s the humor of the film, period. Irene had this beautiful strength and comedic power in this movie not to say that Cary Grant didn’t have a part in that.įirst of all, may I say that I just love the movie posters from back in the day! Anyway, I have to say that this movie (although, slightly unrealistic) makes me just adore Ginger Rogers. Although, watching this, made me fall in love all over again. ![]() This movie is great! I love Irene Dunne in this scene, and to be honest with you all, it’s been years since I had last seen this movie as well. I don’t know how these scripts were written, but, gee wiz. Russell has such a great attitude, and she certainly met her match with Cary Grant. I love the pure humor in this film! Rosalind Russell brings that sassy feminine side of humor in this film, while Cary brings out the harsh fast talking humor–and, well, Rosalind brings out that same kind of humor too. I mean…come on now ladies, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart? It’s too much! Also, watching this film made me think of how fortunate Katharine Hepburn was to be adored by such fine men. One of those movies that you can watch over and over again, and you still laugh as hard as the first time you’d seen it. I haven’t seen this movie in years, but I do recall its great humor.
